Celebrating the Art of Dennis & Roy Barloga
Creating arresting black and white photographs informed by childhood
visits to mountains, lakes, the ocean and the desert. For well over two decades the father and son tandem of Dennis and Roy Barloga have been producing fine photography in a shared studio in the San Francisco Bay Area. Recently the company has gained a third generation, as Roy’s son and Dennis’ grandson, Chase Barloga, joined the team assisting in both creating new images and learning how to best present them.
Dennis has been making photographs since the early 1970s. He is best known for his portfolio of color photographs depicting old-world Europe. After owning two galleries, one in partnership with Roy, he claims to be partially retired, but he has been working at Barloga Studios producing photographic collections featuring natural subjects.
Roy started his career as a youngster sweeping his father’s studio and he never really left. Over the years he learned both the business and artistic aspects of fine photography. He started his own company Barloga Studios – in the mid-90s. Roy initially specialized in infrared imagery, and his work evolved to include natural subjects printed on unusual backgrounds. When his father joined him at Barloga Studios, it seemed that life had come full circle.
“We continue to simplify our compositions, stripping subjects down to their most basic elements. We are also very keen on playing with scale – large things made small and especially small things made large.”
Chase, Roy’s son, recently became the newest addition to the Barloga Studios team. After years of part-time work behind the scenes, Chase has stepped into a full-time role with the company. His photographic voice and printing talents have already become a valuable addition to Barloga Studios.
Currently, Dennis, Roy, and Chase are combining their efforts, talents, and 76 years of collective experience to utilize both modern printing technology and traditional photographic techniques to make prints on a variety of unphotographic substrates. Hand-made paper, film, metal, acrylic, wood, and fabric have all been used in the search for printing mediums that best enhance a given subject. The Barloga Studios team is proud of this collaboration and honored to share their prints with you.
Over the past five years, Barloga Studios has also added a variety of creative hangers and frames to its catalog. Experimenting with leather, rope, wood, and acrylic Barloga Studios has invented a creative twist to the presentation of their work.
Three generations of the Barloga family contribute to the creation of each Barloga Studios print. Supported by a talented support staff, we have spent nearly 80 collective years making photographs – the last 15 solely dedicated to printing on exotic substrates. We are excited and honored to share our work with you.
