The Shiwilu people live in the Peruvian Amazon in a remote village accessible only by river. Their lifestyle includes hunting, fishing and gathering while respecting and living in harmony with nature. Shiwilu artisans help preserve their culture and endangered ancient language, and raise their standard of living by creating and selling artful baskets inspired by traditional containers that have been used to gather and transport goods since ancient times.
While the designs of these tamshi vine baskets are simple, the methods to make them are extraordinary. The materials are collected from deep in the jungle where the Shiwilu walk for six hours following the riverbank and spend several days collecting only the mature vines from the tree tops. Once they return to their village, the vines are peeled and sorted by size. It takes approximately 2-days to weave each stunning basket.
